Intro To Navigation and Hill Skills

Service Description

The ideal course for a complete beginner with maps, or someone with previous skills that are learnt long ago and not used. This one day course is designed to give you a solid foundational knowledge base in navigation and the associated "Hill Skills", upon which further practice will develop life long confidence in the mountain envrionment. Begininng with a "classroom" session of introduction to maps and route planning, followed by a good day out on the hill where you will get lots of hands on time learning the essentials, guided and taught by our experienced team. Topics covered on this course: - Interpreting weather forecasts - Preparing a route card - Equipment needed for the hill - Using the map to navigate - Introduction to navigational aids (distance, time measuring and compass) - Taking a bearing - Walking on a bearing - Dealing with emergencies on the mountain What's included: - Fully qualified and experienced Mountain Leaders to teach you all the skills you'll need - Post course notes to remind you of content covered , with useful links to online media -Tailored content specifically for you - Use of our maps and compasses (but we encourage you to bring your own if you have them) - A  good day's craic out in the hills with lots of learning to be had! ​ What to bring: - A completed Health Declaration & Registration Form  - Any medication you may need - Good hiking boots that are well broken in - Map and compass if you have them - we supply these if you don't have them yet - A digital wrist watch or stopwatch - to measure timing - A rucksack with waterproof liner - Head torch with spare batteries - Emergency bivvy / survival blanket - the orange plastic sheeting with foil blanket inside - Fully charged mobile - Water proof jacket and trousers - Additional warm layers for emergency (down jacket for example) - Lots of light top layers - Hat and gloves - Lunch and water - Flask of hot drink - optional but awesome - Additional food for emergency Covid-19: Should government restrictions come into effect on the date of the course which would prevent us from running the activity, we will offer alternative dates on which to take part in the activity, or a credit note to the value of the missed activity, which can be used against any of our services or events. ​If you would like to come to this course but the dates aren't available here, please contact us to arrange a private booking

Cancellation Policy

Any booking that is cancelled 48 hours or less from the initial event date will fully forfeit the booking costs. If you cancel more than 48 hours from the initial event date, we may offer you a credit note or alternative date, but always at the discretion of Geology Rocks Adventure. All payments and deposits are non-refundable.
